WE'RE TEN YEARS OLDYes, good neighbors. On February 12, 1990, we met at the home of Dick and Mary Frances Smith and organized ourselves as the Barber Tract Homeowners Association. We elected Joe Marrone as President. Woodie Perkins, Vice President, John Mowry, Treasurer and Gordon Johnson, Secretary. We appointed Dick Smith as Chair of the Land Use Committee, Christina Sear, Chair of the Traffic, Parking and Litter Committee, Bob Barthomew, Chair, By Laws Committee and Betty Gealy as Chair of the Environmental Committee. These officers were also elected as Trustees. The following additional Trustees were elected: Carol Whitney, Marylin Robertson and John Mraz. Marge McNair and Jim Eisen, the two most responsible for organizing the association were also elected as Trustees. Your former Publisher, now demoted to Senior Cub Reporter plans a tenth anniversary edition in March, exactly ten years from the first edition, published in March, 1990.
CONTRIUTIONS WANTED Many of us were active in the association in 1990. Your Senior Cub Reporter will welcome recollections and comments from those who were active in 1990.
TIMES ORGANIZATION CHANGINGAs promised, the Publisher of the Barber Tract Times resigned. The Trustees, led by President Linda refused to accept the resignation. A compromise was sought. The result has the ex-publisher reduced to Senior Cub Reporter. He will, with the help of Junior Cub Reporters do the research and write the stories. Recent Barberian Michael Turbitt will become Distribution Manager. The current Paper Persons will, hopefully assist in getting the BTT to all. Linda Neiman will continue as Desk Top Publisher. New Trustee, Yvonne Dutton will be Association Archivist. Others will be named as Photographer, Demographer and Cartographer. Ellen Eckis remains as Quality Control person (AKA proof reader). The regular Paper Persons and their substitutes who served you faithfully for the past years include Jim Woodward, Alicita and Jim Berry, Lou Bauer, Juan and Josephine Green, Gloria Johnson,

A DISTINGUISHED NEIGHBOR HAS LEFT USOur neighbor, Herbert Schiller, UCSD Emeritus Professor of Communication passed on at the venerable age of eighty. He is known throughout the world as a "statesman" in the field of communication. He developed this reputation by his several books and many articles in his field and for having been a member of the faculty and a guest lecturer at the University of Illinois, City College of New York and Pratt Institute, where he was Chairman of the Department of Social Studies. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Stockholm, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Paris.
Our friend and neighbor was on the staff of the Bureau of Economics and Business Research, University of Illinois and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies, Washington, D. C. During World War II, he served with the United States Army. Professor Schiller was a member and officer of several professional associations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of University Professors and the International Association of Mass Communication.
Professor Schiller held the degrees of BSS, City College of New York, MS, Columbia University and Ph. D., New York University. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His published works have been widely translated and include The Mind Managers, National Sovereignty and International Communications among others. In a long obituary, the Los Angeles Times quoted the president of the International Association for Mass Communication Research, as saying, "Herbert Schiller was a media intellectual on a global scale."
Herb and Anita Schiller will be remembered for their walks from their Monte Vista home to Wind `n Sea Beach during which they stopped to chat with neighbors along the way.
Anita Schiller, an Emeritus Librarian at the University of California, San Diego has announced that a memorial tribute to Herb will be held at the Woman's Club at 11 A M on Sunday February 13th. His neighbors are invited.
IT'S NOT FAIR _ ALAN WAS ONLY 35!Association Founding Member, former Trustee, Vice President and Association Attorney, Alan French died in his sleep at the age of 35 after a four-year battle with a rare form of cancer that he and Amy fought together. Not fair! He gave so much. He had so much more to give.
In addition to his association with our neighborhood association, Alan was a successful attorney. He was co-founder of the La Jolla firm of Blanchard, Krasner and French. His specialties were banking, government regulations and real estate law. Alan was a graduate of the University of the Pacific where he graduated Cum Laude. His Juris Doctorate was from Boston University School of Law where he also graduated Cum Laude in 1989 and was Editor of the Annual Review of Banking Law.
COMMUNITY SERVICE Alan has been a positive influence on many families in La Jolla through his activities as a Little League Baseball Coach. Last fall he coached a La Jolla Youth, Inc. Soccer Team to an undefeated season despite the pain and problems caused by his cancer. He was the subject of an inspirational piece by Rory Devine on Channel 7/39 She cited his perseverance in the face of his pain. It aired the day Alan died but inspired those who were watching. Alan was a "jock" in his own right. He played on his Arizona high school's football team and was Captain of the school soccer team.
MEMORIAL SERVICE Friends of Alan and Amy met at Calumet Park for a memorial service at which Monsignor Joe Carroll "Father Joe" presided. Amy provided their friends with a memorial booklet that included pictures of Alan, Amy, Ryan (8), Aubrina (6) and Rory (3). It told of his life and passions. A wonderful piece.

HOLIDAY PARTY AT THE FITCHESWe did it again. Same old format but one that we love repeating. We met at Julie's for the tenth time. We brought finger food. The tables were heavy with samples of our culinary expertise and some bootleg things from the bakery. We assumed the bakery things were brought by the culinary disadvantaged. Santa was there and sat for photos with all the "believers" and some who are still not sure. It was the largest group in the ten year history of this happy community event. Some of our new Barbarians and our new Trustees were with us. In the picture page you'll see the ad hoc group of kids that organized themselves and sang carols from the stairwell. The photos were from Linda's digital camera, transferred to her computer and on to the camera-ready copy of this friendly journal. CHRISTMAS LIGHTSThe late December evening that our Atmosphere Editor and Cartographer surveyed the neighborhood they found indoor Christmas Trees, wreaths on doors and outside holiday lights on every street in the BT. On Fern Glen they found lights on the three houses in the Swedish Colony and at the homes of Carol Baker, the Rickets and the Richardsons. Carol Yorston's palm tree had lights on all its large fronds. The homes of the Mraz, Woodward, Foster, Schneider and Mortenson lit up the Vista del Mar cul de sac.
MONTE VISTA LIGHTS On Monte Vista south, the homes of Anne Haynsworth, of Don Calder and Urrutia and Green displayed holiday spirit. Michael Duddy's palm tree lights were spectacular. The small trees in front of the Frances Zimmerman home were lit. Further North we saw one of the Fitch's trees through the window and luminarios on the walk to the door. The Durhams and Nelsons were well lit as were the homes of the Greens, Beardsly's, Murphy, Luscombs, Clausens, Pings and Brummett.
VISTA DE LA PLAYA AND OLIVETAS Vista de la Playa saw the most lights per home because the Bashors put up more than a thousand. Others on this cul de sac that exhibited holiday cheer included the Shanors, Hardings and Cummings. On Dunemere they saw lights on the homes of John Mowry, and the Pearl/Rep place. Carol Lowrie's outside trees were decorated as were the low lying plants along the McNair's yard. On Olivetas they observed decorations on Buckley's, Loomis, and Skanga's places, on the Brewer/Peters home and on the homes of the Jacksons, the Eisens, Sears, Mudge, Feighan, Moxley and Shark.
BARBER NORTE At the north end of our "little bit of heaven" they saw lights and wreaths on the homes of the Clausens, Clarks, Bergstroms, Frenches and Evans. One of our perennial favorite decorations, the lights on Pat Miller's cactus, were missing this year.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTESBARBARIANS PEREGRINATE Rickets in Europe Barnaby and Hollace spent time in Barcelona and with Barney's parents in England during Christmas and New Years.
Haynsworth to Vermont Anne Haynsworth visited family in Vermont.
Mraz in Oregon Aileen and John Mraz spent Christmas with family in Portland.
Van Buskirk Cruises Mark Van Buskirk is recently back from a ten day cruise stopping at all the western ports of Mexico.
Matt in Canada Matthew Dzieciuch (call him Matt) spent a few days in Canada with family.
Johnsons in Mira Mesa The Johnsons were seen in Mira Mesa.
PATRICIA MILLER'S BIRTHDAY PARTY It was under a canopy in the park by the Cove with great eats catered by Alphonsos, a mariachi band and valet parking. Does that sound like a great way to turn 50 or what? Happy Birthday Patricia!
GINA WRIGHT WRITES Our own Gina Wright's Gina's Garden piece in this month's Décor & Style, distributed throughout the BT tells us a charming story of how the Wright's solved a space problem. Andrew, you see, is also a writer. He is also an artist and hoped for one of the bedrooms as his studio in addition to the room in the guest house where he writes. This was the same space that Gina coveted. She speaks in her article of her friend "Madeleine" who we assumed to be her near neighbor from Belgium, Madeline Eisen. Madeline assisted in reaching a compromise. Upon checking, we were right. Do we have three homophones in one paragraph?

BARBER TRACT TAX COLLECTOR? Elizabeth Gealy sent her $35 to the Barber Tract Tax Collector. The check cleared.
TSUCHIDA'S RESTAURANT PERMITTED After eleven months of trying, Hitoshi and Terri Tsuchida have a building permit to construct their Japanese Restaurant on the small lot on Fay next to the Hard Rock Café. Contractors are bidding. Construction will start in the spring.
JEAN BRUCE'S GRANDDAUGHTER ON TV She is Paz de la Huerta. She's just fifteen. Lives in Manhattan with her parents and will be a special guest actress in the popular Law and Order on February 24th next.
VANITY PLATES ON JAGUARS The new red Jaguar at the Zeman's place has a plate that reads "DR JAZY". The Jag was the present of Mike to Jill (AKA Jazy) on the occasion of her earning a PhD in International Relations from the University of Southern California. At Moxley's place on Olivetas her Jag bears California plates "HRH PLM" We didn't want an official interpretation because we like our own that translates "Her Royal Highness, Priscilla Moxley".
BARBER TRACT WEB PAGEOur own web page on the WWW is not getting much attention. Linda put one photo of the Holiday party on for your amazement. The only news items are from way back last year. Try it. Tell us something about you and your doings. Just log on to www.neighborhoodlink.com/barber. See you there!
SEWER FIXINGS ON MONTE VISTARamin, of the city sewer fixers, tells us that their contractor will be tearing up Monte Vista after mid-May. You can find him at 858-627-3200.

REAL ESTATE STUFFTHE TERRY PUGH REDOS |
7415 VISTA DEL MAR IN ESCROW This 2,579 square foot home has been sold to Betty Rose. Escrow is expected to close mid-March. The asking price was $1,175,000. That's $455 per square foot. That will cause some Barbarians to re-self-appraise their homes upward.
7400 VISTA DEL MAR This seaside tear down has a new owner and approval of the La Jolla Community Planning Association to rebuild. Construction is forecast to start late summer after city and Coastal Commission permits are had.
ROGER CORNELL'S NEW GATE Again to prove that there is nothing too trivial for the BTT, we tell you that Roger Cornell is changing his wrought iron gate for a wooden one, the design of which matches the garage door. You read it here first! WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE CURBS We've seen more wheel chair accessible curb cuts in February than we've seen in the history of the association. At Monte Vista and Dunemere, written in the new concrete where one expects to see the date and name of the contractor we have "Fitch, May 7, 1963", the date Julie and Charles moved in. You may find a "Z" in a neighboring curb.
DID YOU KNOW ABOUT SURFTON PLACE? Did you know that Fern Glen used to be named Surfton Place? See the name in the curb at Fern Glen and Vista del Mar. How trivial can this "rag" get?

The Pugh family "summer camp" on Sea Lane is shaping up as the finest rehab in the BT since Bill Kuni redid his Arenas place. It resembles what was the Robinson place. It fits. It belongs. It's BT style at its best. It's quality in design and workmanship. The neighbors are

pleased. Terry, Kathryn, McKenzie and Tyler plan to spend June, July and August with us. Should they be considered as Family Grand Marshals for the Twenty Fourth Annual Barber Tract Home Owners Association Independence Day Parade and Watermelon and Lemonade Affair?? Their tri-plelx on Marine is getting a new roof among other things. Terry tells us that the rehab will be in a Mediterranean style. The end result will be two, not three units. Completion is scheduled for mid-summer.
THE CHENS ARE COMING, HURRAH, HURRAH Robert and Vanessa Chen and Kelly (5) will be moving into the great rehab on Olivetas in early June. They were wandering the Barber Tract one Sunday some months ago and met the former Editor of this periodica, They asked about homes for sale. They were introduced to the owner of the Olivetas place and voila they now own it. Mark Lyon's design gives the Chens about 2,200 without putting another oversized structure in the BT. Your former Publisher got no commission. They will be welcomed by the BT "Welcome Wagon", AKA Julie Fitch, Newcomer Chair.
DE FRANCO REBUILD LOOKING GREAT Dori and Jack De Franco hope to move into their rebuilt Vista del Mar home by the end of February. Interesting and classy details in the front facade and gateway.
VISTA DEL MAR OCEAN FRONT LOT IN ESCROW The large lot in the 7300 block of Vista del Mar is in escrow again. Owner and price not known to our Real Estate Cub Reporter.
VALENTINES SECOND STORY The addition to the Valentines' Monte Vista home is happening.
SDG&E ENGINEERING UNDERGROUNDINGYour association paid SDG&E to do the engineering that will let us know what it might cost to underground the utility poles and wires in the Barber Norte Undergrounding District. When they finish, the phone folks and the cable people will do their study and cost estimates. Meanwhile the City Council Land Use Committee has some work to do to arrange for an assessment district.

NEW TRUSTEESMATTHEW A. DZIECIUCH, SCIENTIST AND "JOCK" Matt was born a Canadian, grew up in Michigan, is a naturalized Barberian and US citizen. Eight years ago he got his PhD from the University of Michigan, was hired by the UCSD and moved into the Barber Tract. A very good year for Matt. Matt works for world famous Oceanographer Walter Munk in the Institute of Geophysical and Planetary Physics. These are the folks who have measuring devices and transmitters all over the Pacific which help us predict weather patterns. Weekends may find Matt on the blue Pacific in his kayak, on his bicycle, swimming or creating something in his workshop. He was elected a Trustee at the last Membership Meeting and accepted the job of Membership Chairman.
MICHAEL TURBITT, ENGINEER TURNED FURNITURE MAKER Michael Turbitt was lured from Maryland to San Diego by the folks at Cubic that make ticketing machines for the subways of the world. He retired from the engineering world, lived in Mission Hills for a time and is now a Barberian who loves the neighborhood and the community spirit fostered by your association and the BTT. He is engaged in community service work as a volunteer for Planned Parenthood and for a mentoring program sponsored by First United Methodist Church. He has a great workshop in his garage and is an amateur but skilled furniture maker. Michael was named a Trustee at last October's Membership Meeting. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland (BSME)
THOSE TWO-FOR-ONE GREENS Like President Bill said when hustling votes back in '96, hire me and get Hillary too. Michael and Gloria Green consider themselves co-trustees. Pay for one. Get two. Such a deal! These good people and their daughters live behind that interesting Monte Vista gate and a wall covered with bougainvillea. In addition to the co-trustees, the Greens' place houses two daughters, Adrianna 23 and Megan 17. Adrianna graduated from Point Loma College and is working on her Master's Degree in Education at National University. She'd like to teach at Bird Rock Elementary where she now works as a Teachers Aid. Megan is a Junior at Francis Parker and is an accomplished horse |
womana jumper in some contests. Her horse Flash lives in Del Mar because we have no stables in the Barber Tract. Gloria and Michael are ex-Zonies who have lived with us for thirteen years. Michael is a co-founder of Toro Aire, a manufacturers representative specializing in air conditioning equipment. Gloria has the most important job in the world, a full time parent and homemaker who takes some time off for golf.
YVONNE DUTTON/DANCER, LITIGATOR Yes our new Trustee left home in Maryland for a career in Manhattan as a professional dancer. She made good use of her time by earning a bachelor's degree and her Juris Doctorate from Columbia University. In New York she was with the United States Attorneys Office fighting narcotics and organized crime. She married J. P. Morgan Investment Banker, Walter Fitsimmons. Together they opted for laid back San Diego and are now our neighbors. Yvonne is a litigator with the firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, dealing in civil cases. Walter is with investment bankers, Pacific Corporate Group, both, unhappily, with offices downtown. They share a passion for the arts. They are both on the board of the Malashock Dance Company, a local group of dance professionals. It's good to have an attorney on the board who doesn't keep time when answering questions about association actions.
BLYTHE ROBINSON, DOCTOR/GARDNER/GOURMET COOK Yes, Dr. Blythe is all of those good things and one of our new Trustees too. What more could husband/attorney Todd want in a wife. Don't answer that! Doctor Robinson practices with an Anesthesiology Group at Sharp Hospital, Chula Vista. She is responsible for the great colors of the paint job on their home on Monte Vista at Belvedere. The great flowers are also her fault. Todd met Blythe when they were in undergraduate school at Berkley. Blythe went on to earn her M. D. at UCLA while Todd got his law degree from Georgetown. Todd is with the United States Attorney's San Diego Office, sending malefactors to the pokey. He is an avid ocean swimmer and has won the Gator Head competition (La Jolla Cove to Scripps Pier).

DZIECIUCH IS MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN Matt Dzieciuch has been named Membership Chairman by your Board of Trustees.Your Membership Checks should now go to Matt at 227 Fern Glen.
MEMBERSHIPSNew Membership Chairman Matt Dzieciuch now has the list of everyone in the BT and their membership history in his computer. As you send in your $35, he will put a fine large "X" next to your name in the 2000 column. He will forward your check to Treasurer Carolyn who salts it away, awaiting the need to pay the printer or other association expenses. Julie Fitch will send you a thank you letter and a six color BTHA logo decals for your auto. After the rush of checks that will follow this edition of your neighborhood news, Matt will find that some of the "old faithful" will have forgotten. That will cause him to send a note to those procrastinators along with a stamped envelope that will make it easy for you to un-procrastinate. Your check today will save thirty three cents for the note to you and thirty three for the return envelope.
